Made from the finest hardwoods in the Northwest, sources include salvage from saw mills, orchard groves and logging sites. Maple Burl, Madrone Burl and walnut are some of the best woods found anywhere. Spalting is the result of exposure to weather conditions that are wet through the winter, dry and hot in summer. Burlwood is rare but not un-common in the forests of Southern Oregon. The arms, legs and support branches are Manzanita, known for its strength and durability, these are carefully secured by not only screws but by carving pieces to fit tightly and weaving branches to support weight evenly.

Replacing missing ornamental pieces also led to his sculpture work. Philip has been woodworking since 14 years old, fortunate to have had a well equipped wood shop in junior high in Downey, California where he grew up, moving to Oregon in 1986. Philip is now in his early 50's.
